Museum History

Founded in 1992, The Hertford Art Museum is one of United Kingdom's most unique museums for contemporary art. The founder of the museum, Zera Knowles, spent most of her life focused not only on collecting the most remarkable works of contemporary art, but also on enabling the general public to explore and actively interact with her collection.

New museum building, designed in 2016 by innovative young architect Dominic Mann, perfectly reflects museum's founder, Zera Knowles, delicate, dreamy way of being. It is considered a great tribute to this extraordinary resident of the city of Hertford.

The programming of the activities - exhibitions, workshops, lectures, educational projects - reflects Art Museum's vocation as a place for the conservation and exhibition of its collections but also, and above all, a laboratory for cultural experimentation and innovation, for the study, research and sharing the aesthetic contents of our time.

The Hertford Art Museum actively cooperates with numerous municipal and private institutions, organizing joint events and projects.
